Essential Oils to Help Clear Your Sinuses

Essential oils can be a great natural alternative to synthetic medicines, and entirely adaptable to your body’s needs. While essential oils are utilized for all sorts of ailments, mental and physical, their use for opening up the sinuses has shown to be particularly beneficial.

There are several essential oils that have rewarding effects for those struggling with sinus symptoms. A few of these include lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, chamomile, tea tree, rosemary, oregano, thyme, clove, lemon, and geranium.  When taken as a remedy for sinus troubles, these oils are capable of reducing inflammation, easing respiratory congestion and irritation. They can be administered via a humidifier, diffuser, steam inhalation (such as adding a few drops in your hot shower or bath), sinus and/or head massage, warm compress, or oral consumption.

A lot of over the counter (OTC) medications carry a list of potential side effects such as drowsiness, headaches, high blood pressure, and a rapid heart rate.  Essential oils offer a potentially cleaner and more healthy approach to remedying symptoms such as congestion due to allergies or the common cold, bacteria, and inflammation.

Lavender has long been used to soothe the mind, but did you know that it also contains anti-bacterial properties that can cleanse the sinuses and reduce irritation caused by inflammation? Peppermint oil is another essence that has similar benefits. Peppermint oil has been shown to relieve headaches, fight bacteria and viruses, as well as reduce inflammation.

Chamomile is often used as a calming sedative or sleep aid, but it also contains anti-septic and anti-allergen properties as well. Likewise, tea tree oil is also believed to contain anti-septic properties. Moreover, tea tree oil can also break up phlegm that clogs your sinuses and causes congestion.

Clove is an excellent oil to aid in sinuses, as it has a variety of beneficial assets. Clove has both anti-septic and anti-fungal properties coupled with a cooling capability that eases discomfort and inflammation, which causes sinus pressure.

Oregano is another antibacterial extract as well as an antioxidant, making it a very effective remedy to sinus problems. Rosemary is an essence that carries multiple healing qualities for sinus irritation. Rosemary is a stimulant that carries antimicrobial and analgesic (pain relief) faculties. Geranium oil is yet another anti-inflammatory extract that supports easing headaches and congestion caused by sinusitis.

Other oils, such as thyme, pine, and eucalyptus also contain antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and are capable of breaking up phlegm and cooling your respiratory system.

While these oils work well on their own, there are a few tried and true combinations that work best:

  1. Rosemary or pine, peppermint, and eucalyptus
  2. Eucalyptus and menthol (a traditional method).
  3. Rosemary, thyme, and peppermint
  4. Rosemary, geranium, peppermint, and eucalyptus
  5. For a daytime pick-me-up combination, try eucalyptus, tea tree, and thyme.
  6. For a calming nighttime remedy, try lavender, chamomile, and thyme.
  7. Clove, tea tree, thyme, lemon
  8. And last but not least, one of the best inhalation blends is: eucalyptus, thyme, peppermint, and rosemary.

These are just a few combinations to get you on the road to alleviation and recovery. If you are using any of the oils listed so far, you are on the right track. No matter what combination you prefer, each of these oils contains healing properties and has the potential to offer you a healthy and natural relief to your sinus discomfort.
